The structures “In order to” and “so as to” mean “to, so that”, used in sentences to introduce the purpose of the action mentioned just before.

Viewing: What is In order to

Eg:

– I study English in order to speak to my English friend. (I learn English to talk with my friend from England)

– She works hard so as to have a better life in the future. (She works hard to have a better life in the future)

– He drove so fast in order to go to the meeting on time. (He drives fast to get to the meeting on time.)

II – Structure in English order to and so as to

1. Case 1: When the purpose of the action is directed towards the subject of the action stated in front

Eg:

I worked hard. I wanted to pass the test. (I study hard. I want to pass the exam.)

=> I worked hard so as to/in order to pass the test. (I studied hard to pass the exam.)

I worked hard. I didn’t want to fail the test. (I study hard. I don’t want to fail the exam.)

=> I worked hard in order not/so as not to fail the test. (I study hard so as not to fail the exam.)

2. Case 2: When the action goal is directed to another object

S + V + in order + for O + (not) + to + V ….

Eg:

– She works hard. She wants her kid to have a better life. (She works hard. She wants her children to have a better life.)

=> She works hard in order for her kid to have a better life. (She works hard to give her children a better life.)

– In order for the light to work, you must press the button. (For the light to work, you must turn on the switch).

3. A few notes on the structure of so as to/ in order to in English.

– The structure in order to / so as to is only applicable when the two subjects of the two sentences are the same

Eg:

I always get up early. I don’t want to go to work late. (I always get up early. I don’t want to be late for work).

=> I always get up early so as not/in order not to go to work late. (I always get up early so I don’t have to be late for work).

– Remove the subject and words like want, hope, … and keep the verb after it when using the structure in order to, so as to.

Eg:

I have taken many extracurricular activities. I want to improve my soft skills. (I participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. I want to improve my soft skills).

=> I have taken many extracurricular activities in order to/so as to improve my soft skills. (I participate in a lot of extracurricular activities to improve my soft skills).

III. Some structures are equivalent to in order to/so as to structure in English

Here are some equivalent structures for in order to, so as to in English. You can use these structures in communication, writing, or exam rewrites!

Big + DRAW

Eg:

I often do morning exercises. I want to keep fit and stay healthy. (I usually exercise in the morning. I want to stay fit and healthy.)

**However, do not use not + to V in place of in order/ so as + not to V.

2. So that

Eg:

– I wear warm clothes in winter. I don’t want to have a cold. (I dress warmly in winter. I don’t want to catch a cold.)

– I wear warm clothes in winter so that I will not have a cold. (I dress warmly in winter so I don’t catch a cold.)

3. With a view to V-ing

Eg:

– I must visit many museums in the city to accomplish my report. (I had to visit many museums in the city to complete my report).

=> With a view to accomplishing my report, I must visit many museums.

– I have to practice playing the piano so much to have a good performance tonight.

=> With a view to having a good performance tonight, I have to practice playing the piano so much. (In order to have a good performance tonight, I have to practice playing the piano a lot)

4. With an aim of + V-ing Ví dụ:

– I find a partner to practice speaking English everyday.

=> With an aim of practicing speaking English everyday, I find a partner. (Tôi tìm bạn học để luyện tập nói tiếng Anh mỗi ngày)
